The word “recall” has become common in our culture, but it should be unacceptable when it comes to medical items and durable medical equipment. Stairlifts provide a valuable solution for those with mobility issues, allowing safe and easy navigation of stairs at home. However, like any mechanical device, stairlifts can face safety concerns and potential hazards. Here are some notable stairlift recalls from recent years:

Notable Stairlift Recalls

 1. Acorn Stairlifts (2015)

In 2015, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled about 34,500 Acorn Superglide 120 and Acorn Superglide 120 Outdoor Stairlifts. This recall was prompted by the potential hazard of the chair lift falling off the track. Reports indicated that the chair lift could unexpectedly come off the track, posing a serious risk of injury to users. Unfortunately, two people died as a result of Acorn’s production and sales process.

 2. Stannah Stairlifts (2010)

In 2010, Stannah Stairlifts recalled approximately 750 Model 420 Straight Stairlifts due to a similar issue. The chair lift was at risk of falling off the track, leading to potential injuries. Stannah Stairlifts addressed this safety concern by offering a free repair kit to affected customers.

 3. Handicare Stairlifts (2015)

In 2015, Handicare Stairlifts issued a recall for about 2,800 Handicare 950 Stairlifts. The issue involved the seat post potentially separating from the main support, which could result in serious injury. Handicare Stairlifts responded by providing free repairs to affected customers.

 4. Bruno Independent Living Aids (2017)

Bruno Independent Living Aids recalled about 3,000 Bruno SRE-2010 and SRE-2750 Stairlifts in 2017 due to a similar seat post separation risk. The recall affected models with serial numbers 1704000001 through 1707257054. Bruno offered free repairs to address the safety concern.

The Importance of Regular Maintenance and Safety Checks

These recalls highlight the importance of regular maintenance and safety checks for all mechanical devices, including stairlifts. While recalls can be concerning, they serve as crucial reminders to ensure that your stairlift is functioning safely.

Regular maintenance and adherence to safety guidelines are essential to ensure your stairlift functions safely and effectively.
